Virginia History Road Trip Guide
The Land and Its First People
Before we explore the forts and capitals, let's meet the land itself and the sophisticated society of its first inhabitants, the Powhatan people. The geography of Tidewater Virginia—a world shaped by the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers—is the main character in our story.
Tsenacomoco: The Powhatan World
Long before English ships arrived, this land was a thriving world called Tsenacomoco, home to the Powhatan Confederacy. This was a powerful political entity of over 30 tribes led by the paramount chief, Wahunsenacawh, whom the English called Chief Powhatan. His government was complex, his people lived a rich life tied to the seasons, and their society was matrilineal, meaning heritage passed through the mother's line.
A Day in the Life of a Powhatan Child
Imagine living in a long, cozy house called a *yehakim*. Kids had important jobs! They acted as human scarecrows in the cornfields, shouting to keep birds away. Boys learned to hunt and fish, while girls helped farm the "Three Sisters"—corn, beans, and squash. For fun, they played running games, which was great practice for becoming fast messengers!
A World Changed Forever
The arrival of the English in 1607, combined with disease and a severe drought, had a devastating impact on the Powhatan people.

The Historic Triangle
Journey through the birthplace of America! The three points of the triangle—Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown—tell the story of a fragile English outpost that became a powerful colony and, finally, an independent nation. A drive along the scenic Colonial Parkway connects these three essential chapters of our history.

Local Stories: Toano & Midlothian
Beyond the famous triangle, your family's destinations have their own unique and important histories. Discover how a railroad created a town from "Burnt Ordinary" and how the quiet woods of Midlothian became the site of America's first coal industry.
🚂 Toano: The Town the Railroad Built
This area started as a simple crossroads with a tavern known as "Burnt Ordinary." Everything changed in 1881 when the C&O Railway came through. The railroad crew, having just worked out west, named the new station "Toano," a Native American term for "high ground." The railroad turned this spot into a bustling hub for shipping farm goods, for a time even bigger than Williamsburg!
For the Kids
Imagine a group of workers building a railroad. When they reached the highest spot on the peninsula, they gave it a special name from out west: **Toano** (TOE-ann-oh)! The train made it possible for farmers to send their potatoes and melons all the way to big cities.
⛏️ Midlothian: America's First Coal Mines
Long before coal was mined in other parts of America, it was discovered right here in Chesterfield County. This coal was vital—it fueled cannons for the Revolutionary War and ironworks for the Civil War. Getting the heavy coal to the river led to amazing inventions, like Virginia's first paved road and its very first railroad, cleverly powered by mules and gravity!
For the Kids
How do you move tons of heavy coal without a steam engine? With a mule-powered roller coaster! Full coal cars rolled downhill on the tracks all by themselves. Then, strong mules pulled the empty cars back up to the mines. You can visit **Mid-Lothian Mines Park** today to see the stone ruins of where it all happened.
